Ten Chimneys is the historic home of actors Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. The couple, American theater’s pre-eminent pair from the 1920s to the 1960s, built the estate in 1933 and lived, worked, and entertained there for 50 years. As a collection of original buildings and vernacular structures, including a log structure relocated from Sweden, the complex presents an eclectic collection of styles that formed an appropriately theatrical setting for the Lunts rural retreat.

Gene Hopkins, FAIA, as principal in charge, and a fellow FAIA member were commissioned by the Foundation and led a team of national experts in preparing an Historic Site Analysis and Preliminary Master Plan. The report is a comprehensive examination of historic research, original design, alterations, maintenance, and existing conditions leading to comprehensive recommendations, including costs, priorities, and phasing.

In addition to presenting a thorough architectural and site analysis and restoration plan, work included recommendations for mechanical upgrades appropriate for the preservation of both the building and contents, as well as assessment and treatment recommendations for furnishings and extensive decorative painting, as well as evaluation and categorization of antiques.

Follow-up work included preliminary design of a new visitor’s center, to be compatible with the character of the site and structures
