Northville, Michigan, is a growing residential community known for its traditional downtown and surrounding historic neighborhoods, many of which date to the 1860s. As development pressures increased alongside the city’s popularity within the Detroit metropolitan area, the need emerged for formal design guidelines to protect the architectural character of its National Historic District. The guidelines were intended to support the Historic District Commission (HDC) and educate property owners and residents on appropriate preservation practices.
Architects Four, the predecessor to HopkinsBurns Design Studio, developed Northville’s Historic District Design Standards to establish a consistent framework for reviewing proposed alterations to existing buildings and new construction within the historic district. The standards provide educational resources on historic preservation principles, architectural styles, material maintenance, and building codes while guiding users through the city’s regulatory review process. User-friendly examples illustrate recommended design practices, helping commissioners, property owners, and residents make informed decisions that preserve Northville’s historic character while accommodating thoughtful development.
