Nickels Arcade is an important landmark in Ann Arbor located across from the “diag” of the University of Michigan. The arcade’s collection of stores in the city’s State Street shopping area includes a tobacconist, antique collectibles, an art gallery, clothing stores and unique gift shops.
Gene Hopkins, FAIA, as principal-in-charge and preservation architect was responsible for the restoration of this unique urban building. Work included restoration of original lighting, storefronts, signage, doors, and windows. In addition, second floor corridors to office space were renovated, and awnings were replaced on both the State Street and Maynard Street facades.
In addition, the firm designed the new entrance on the north, the conceptual design for the reorganization of the main banking floor, and the restoration of the original banking room, grafting original material from the south side of the building to the front, or primary façade.
This Tax Act project was certified by the Department of the Interior.
