The Agriculture Hall was built in 1909; an addition, called the Annex, was constructed in the 1930s. Together, the facility contains classroom, laboratory, office, common, and support space.
Typical of many older university facilities, the 90 year-old building found itself to be under-utilized. HopkinsBurns, as Architects Four, prepared a feasibility study to explore several options, such as renovating and adding to the existing Annex or removing it and building a new addition in order to accommodate programming needs. The study included an analysis of the existing conditions of the Annex and the estimated costs for all schemes considered.
Working closely with the MSU budget and space needs, HopkinsBurns designed a partial removal of the existing Annex as well as a new 27,000 square feet office addition and renovated office and classroom space in the original portion of the building.
The renovated Annex provides an open commons area, keeping with its original function as a pavilion and serving to connect the historic structure with the addition. Both the Annex and the addition were designed to complement and enhance the architecture of the original historic building while providing state-of-the-art technology and function.
