Originally constructed as a retail corridor, these prominently located buildings are among those of downtown Howell that epitomize the ornate architectural styles popular at the time of their construction. These buildings operated as retail businesses and during the 1960s, the facades were “modernized” by expanding their show windows and adding metal paneling and canopies over the original limestone and wooden details.

Gene Hopkins, FAIA, as principal in charge, restored the facades to their historically appropriate appearance. Work included evaluating the existing condition, original characteristics, and inappropriate alterations; developing a historically sensitive rehabilitation design; and overseeing the construction phases to ensure renovation were completed in accordance to the established design, cost and schedule requirements. Specifically restoration included repairing the limestone columns and wood detailing on the facades, masonry restoration throughout the buildings and miscellaneous roofing/waterproofing repairs. Now complete, the buildings once again reflects the craftsmanship and dignity of the Howell’s original downtown streets
