The renovation of the Grand Valley State University Bookstore was driven by several key design objectives: to improve traffic flow, effectively utilize the store’s unusual trapezoidal shape, and model the space after a “trade” or consumer bookstore. An additional goal was to incorporate an in-store café to better meet the unique needs of commuter students.

Wood fixtures and other traditional finishes give the bookstore a classic look. Designers selected finish materials that provide an aesthetically pleasing appeal while ensuring durability for long-term use. The largest hurdle designers faced was the trapezoidal shape of the store. To address this, walls were constructed to departmentalize the merchandise, which in turn gave the space a larger appearance. Although the new design provides fewer linear feet of fixtures, the fixtures selected allow for greatly increased merchandise inventory.

Improved traffic flow was achieved by organizing the store into clearly defined departments, including trade books and textbooks, clothing, supplies, and electronics. A large information desk serves as a central focal point where shoppers can stop for directions. Throughout the store, small fixtures on casters offer flexibility to accommodate seasonal student rushes. In the computer area, a sampling station allows shoppers to test the latest software innovations.

Within the bookstore is the Afterwards Café, featuring coffee, snacks, and e-mail terminals for shoppers. The café was placed in a previously underutilized space at the front corridor of the store. Now, it creates an inviting atmosphere where customers can relax and spend time, giving students a place to go, encouraging them to shop more often while remaining on campus. Café tables and chairs sit atop wood vinyl flooring, contributing to a cozy feel. Adding to the warmth is a custom-painted mural gracing the back wall of the café, created by a GVSU student.
