Built as an equestrian barn, the Ellis Barn is a unique example of northeast vernacular architecture found in Michigan.  In 2002, plans began as a Michigan Transportation Enhancement Project to relocate this unique piece of Oakland County’s history from its previous location slated for development to one where it could continue to be utilized.

HopkinsBurns, as SmithGroup, worked closely with the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Department as well as MDOT to develop a work plan for the disassembly, cataloging, relocation, reassembly and rehabilitation of the historic Ellis Barn. The work plan involves dismantling the 15,000 square feet barn at its current location in Clarkston, Michigan, relocating it nearly 7 miles to the Springfield Oaks County Park, and rehabilitating it for use as an educational equestrian center. SmithGroup accurately developed drawings using measurements and comprehensive photographic documentation of the building prior to its disassembly, and they also used detailed specifications for its relocation and subsequent rehabilitation.  Rehabilitation work includes replacement of deteriorated materials, as well as new roofing and doors.  All specifications and scope of work detailed by the team closely adhered to the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.  Ellis Barn was relocated late summer in 2004.
