The De Carlo Visitor Center at Meadowbrook Hall was envisioned as a contemporary architectural gateway that would clarify visitor arrival while preserving the historic character of the estate. Previously, visitors arriving from the parking lot lacked a clear point of entry, creating confusion about how to access the campus. The new facility establishes an intuitive transition from arrival to exploration, combining a Welcome Center, orientation museum, and museum store. Exposed timber framing, warm wood detailing, and expressive gabled forms draw inspiration from the craftsmanship of Meadow Brook Hall while introducing a modern hospitality experience.

The design team developed a visitor experience that connects architectural expression with the storytelling of Meadow Brook Hall. The Welcome Center establishes an inviting point of arrival, while a carefully framed opening leads visitors into flexible museum spaces that interpret the estate’s history and legacy. The museum store extends the experience through complementary materials and exposed structural elements that unify the interior. Positioned between the arrival plaza and the historic campus, the De Carlo Visitor Center serves as a transitional threshold, orienting visitors and enriching their understanding of the estate before they explore its historic grounds.
