The Charlevoix Pier Lighthouse was constructed in 1885, shortly following the channel opening of the Pine River to allow Lake Charlevoix to serve as a harbor for Lake Michigan. Located on the north pier, the lighthouse was built to assist vessels navigating into the channel. The original lighthouse was relocated to the south pier circa 1915. Eventually, the red wooden lighthouse was replaced with the current white steel structure in 1948. The original lantern, which has been guarding the channel since 1885, was relocated to this new structure. The lighthouse color was changed from red to white in the 1960’s to increase visibility. The lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation.
The Coast Guard is scheduled to excess the Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse in 2005 or 2006, and the city of Charlevoix with assistance from the Charlevoix Historical Society is interested in obtaining title to the light. SmithGroup is preparing a Historic Structure Report that includes a full understanding of the scope of work involved with ownership, restoration and maintenance of the lighthouse; including financial implications. The Historic Structure Report includes an overview of the light’s history, detailed analysis of its existing conditions, treatment recommendations for its future use, measured drawings and outline specifications.
